When my son turned 3, his grandmother bought him a new bedroom set. It's gorgeous, with a "cabin" feel to it. It even has a tent-like canopy on the twin bed. Well, since I only had toddler bedding stuff, I needed to update.

At first I was thinking of going the character route, especially since my son LOVES super heroes. But it just didn't complement the new bedroom set. Then I remembered Olive Kids. I decided to go there and check it out. I fell in love with the non-character selections for boys, with fun themes like Space, Cowboys, Pirates and more. I decided to buy the Ride 'em Twin Bedbox, because the cowboy print would surely complement his new room!

The Ride 'em Twin Bedbox set includes a fitted comforter, fitted sheet, straight sheet, bedskirt, pillowcase and sham. When it came in I realized that the bedskirt would not fit correctly his style of bed. Bummer. And the comforter, with its prefolded end, needs to be pushed down to fit on his bed correctly. It's called a "Hugger". It is reversible, with the other side being a red paisley pattern.

The sheetset fit wonderfully! It has wonderful cream color with red trim and a pattern of cowboys, cacti, covered wagons, and campfires decorating it. The pillowcase has a coordinating red paisley hem that is folded and sewn. And the sham was a red paisley pattern, perfectly complementing the sheets. The sheets are 100% Percale Cotton, 210 thread count.

When all is said and done, it looks fabulous!

Olive Kids gave me a wonderful opportunity to review a personalized item from their shop, suggesting their new framed prints. I visited and thought the Ride 'em Cowboy print would truly complement his new bedding! In fact, you will find personalized prints to match all of their bedding - but it will also fit in wonderfully if you buy it by itself. They have mermaids, pirate ships, planes and more to choose from!

When it came in, with a black wooden frame, it had his name printed on it. It was such a surprise for him and looks great hanging in his room! The print is pretty big, measuring 18.5 x 24.5.

Honestly, I could go wild completely finishing his room with coordinating pieces, like draw pulls, throws, rugs, wallies and more. And with bedding sets in sizes from toddler to Queen, you can count on finding what you want in the size you need. (I was so annoyed when some of those character sets that I was considering prior only came in toddler or full! What about twin?)

The entire experience with Olive Kids has been wonderful and you can be sure I will be back to buy my second son's bedroom set, as well. This time I am thinking pirates!

Rain Rain Go Away

We are dreaming of Summer BBQ's and most importantly Sunshine here in New Hampshire!

So far this month it has rained 16 out of the last 25 days - we didn't have any rain the first week of June - so basically it has been raining everyday since June 8th! We had a terrible winter (ice storms and record cold) so we were hoping to have a hot sunny summer instead we went from having weather like Alaska to having weather like Seattle... we are still hoping for weather like the bahamas!

The last BBQ's I went to, the cook (my wonderful brother-in-law Bob) had rigged up an umbrella to keep himself dry while he cooked our steaks and grilled corn on the cob. Because it was raining and everyone had to eat inside I wanted to bring some extra fun to the BBQ so I was surprised everyone with a personalized summer placemat; they were the perfect place setting and conversation piece!

After everyone finished eating we went around the table telling our favorite beach story from when we were a little kid. It was great and I loved when my 16 year old son told this story - it was about a very sunny day in July, he was about 7 years old.

I had gone away on a business trip to Newport RI and while I was there I found this wonderful kite shop. I looked around the store for a long time and finally decided to purchase a kite shaped like a dolphin for him. I also bought all the streamers and fun attachments you could add to the string as the kite got higher and higher in the sky.

He was so excited when I gave him the kite that we jumped into the car and drove to Plum Island. We spent hours trying to get that kite up in the sky. When we finally did it was amazing; we flew it till the sun started to set, we didn't want to let it come down because we spent so much time trying to get that kite up in the air. We went out for dinner, talked about our adventure and finished the night off we a special ice cream treat!

It is amazing the memories you can share when you start the conversation with a question to everyone! Mine started with our Personalized Sand Castle Placemats! Memories of Summer Reading

Believe it or not school will soon be out for the summer here in New Hampshire. It's later than usual because we had terrible ice storms that took out our electricity, causing schools to closed for more than a week.

At first kids were excited that they didn't have to go to school for another week (it was on the end of winter vacation) but when they realized school would have to last longer in the summer they were not happy.

I can still remember when the bell rang at the end of the day, on the last day of school before summer vacation - it was so exciting. Summertime meant riding our bikes everywhere, hanging out with our cousins, going to the beach with my parents, and staying out till the street lights came on - the good old days.

One my best memories is when we would get one of those steaming hot nights (we didn't have air conditioning) and sleeping was impossible. So my parents would load all 5 kids into the station wagon (you know the one with the fake wood paneling) and we would drive to the beach and lay under the weeping willow tree. My parents would read stories to us until we fell asleep, bookmarking the place they left off for our next night time visit. Then they would pick us up sound asleep and put us into the cars and then into our beds. As each of us got older we took turns doing the reading and helping to pick up our younger siblings! I believe that is one of the main reasons I love to read today!

I can still remember what the bookmark looked like and how excited we were to begin where we had left off the last time we read together.

I do own a sewing machine, really I do. How often I use it is another story! When my kids were little I always made their halloween costume, but now that they are grown I find my self using it less and less. When our family lost our home to a fire 2 years ago I was back to square one with the boys rooms. That she did a blog post about her purchase of our dinosaurland bedding, here is what Terri from my brand name baby has to say about Olive Kids:

"STAT.....that's how quickly I need to learn the pronunciations of all the dinosaurs' names. (And, based on how hard it was for me to spell pronunciations, I'm thinking I'm in trouble.) My daughter has taken an interest in the prehistoric set, and I find myself shopping for the big, ugly creatures, when I could be hanging out in Strawberry Shortcake-land. Case in point, we were looking in the toy section of our local superstore last week and when we walked by the barbies, she gave them a cursory glance and said "pretty". Then, she spotted a huge, horrible, dinosaur skeleton from across toy section, and took off running. Her eyes were as big as saucers, and she said "beautiful".

So, being the good Mom I'm trying to be, I'm looking for all things dinosaur. My first stop is one of my favorite shops, Olive Kids. Spring is here in New Hampshire

I orginally posted this on the official first day of Spring but as I was driving into work today with the view of Mt Monadnock (without any snow on it) I decided that I should update it.

Now that Spring has arrived in New Hampshire...

Here are my updated top ten things Spring in New Hampshire means to me!

1. Melting snow (hopefully) The snow is all gone!!!
2. Snow Storms (hopefully not - last year we had one on April 1st) Pheww we made it without any more snow
3. Crocuses trying to push up from under the snow They are now in full bloom with tulips on the way
4. Frost Heaves (do you even know what those are? they make traveling on roads a bumpy adventure!) Still a pretty bumpy road
5. Lots of MUD (we call it mud season) Mud Mud is everywhere
6. Large mud puddles that switch back and forth from liquid to ice - had ice this morning will be 60 this afternoon...that's New Hampshire
7. Wild Turkeys crossing the road on a blind curve while your driving - the deer are out on the roads and we have seen a mamma bear with her two baby cubs in our friends yard
8. Fishing season begins (hopefully the ice has melted by then) - It's official "Ice Out" has happened and my husband caught his first fish - a salmon! It was delicious!
9. Time to sweep up all the sand off the roads and driveways (it always amazes me how much there is) - wow do the streets look good without all the sand!
10. The best for last ....it means that the grass will be green again, leaves will once again be on the trees and sunny days will soon be here! The grass is greener, you can see the buds on the trees ...and it's time to start working on the garden

That is what Spring is all about here in New Hampshire and I love each and every one (except for the late snowstorms)

I hate to brag (no I don't) -- I am happy to announce our newest Olive Kid -- my (Kim's) grand daughter Eliana Lucia Forzese, she was born on March 24th at 6:55 pm! My beautiful (both in looks and spirit) daughter-in-law Erica did a marvelous job delivering my first grand child!! and my loving son Kevin did an outstanding job supporting her. They are a wonderful couple and they are going to be amazing parents.

Everything is so different since I had kids, so many new things! My favorite is the internet because they currently live in Iowa (and I am in New Hampshire) so I get to see her everyday via videos, live shows on skype and lots and lots of pictures right at my finger tips!

It's the first Day of Spring!

Spring in New Hampshire means lots of different things!

Here are my top ten things Spring in New Hampshire means to me!

1. Melting snow (hopefully)
2. Snow Storms (hopefully not - last year we had one on April 1st)
3. Crocuses trying to push up from under the snow
4. Frost Heaves (do you even know what those are? they make traveling on roads a bumpy adventure!)
5. Lots of MUD (we call it mud season)
6. Large mud puddles that switch back and forth from liquid to ice
7. Wild Turkeys crossing the road on a blind curve while your driving
8. Fishing season begins (hopefully the ice has melted by then)
9. Time to sweep up all the sand off the roads and driveways (it always amazes me how much there is)
10. The best for last ....it means that the grass will be green again, leaves will once again be on the trees and sunny days will soon be here!

That is what Spring is all about here in New Hampshire and I love each and every one (except for the late snowstorms)

Update: March 30th - Russell had a perfect New Hampshire Spring post on his Facebook page and it goes like this "...Its that lovely time of year in NH when the snowdrifts finally melt and you find all the crap on your lawn you forgot to put away..." That is the perfect ending to what Spring means in New Hampshire!

When I first opened up the box of Olive Kids goodies, I was really impressed with the quality and just how striking the colors and images were. I knew my boys were going to love them!

We selected the Wild Animals Placemat for DS1 because he loves all kinds of animals. We previously used another type of laminated placemat that started to fall apart after just a few uses and washes. We also tried using regular cotton placemats, but they'd easily stain and eventually fade after throwing them in the wash after every use. Olive Kids’ Placemat is sturdy, easy to clean, and what I like best of all is that if I’m still getting things ready for DS1’s meal and he’s already sitting at the table, I just keep him occupied by asking him to point to different animals or colors on the placemat.

Birthday Celebrations!

If you have a young child you know that having their birthday party is no easy task! First you have to decide whether your going to have a family party or are you going to invite some of their friends... Maybe you have both!

If you decided on having friends are you going to invite the entire class, just close friends or maybe just boys or just girls!

Now you have to decide if your going to have it at home (less expensive but more work) or at some venue like the bowling alley or roller skating rink (which can get pricey if you invited the entire class).

The time of day is a big deal too, because that is the deciding factor to whether or not you have to serve a meal or just snacks and birthday cake... yikes this is a lot of work!

Rachell was one of the winners in our our January contest! When I contacted her to let her know she won the personalized holiday pack of Olive Kids placemats - she was very excited. Baby's first bed as told by Lotus

At Olive Kids we talk a lot about how important the transition is from the crib to a child's first big kids bed. Everyone has a different approach, some parent move their kids into a toddler bed and then into a larger size bed. Believe it of not a large number of kids skip the toddler/twin bed and go right to the larger size. At Olive Kids we wanted to be sure that we had all options for parents and that's why we carry all of our designs in toddler, twin, full and queen.

Olive Kids! Do You?
Towards the end of last year, John and I decided that it was time to move Braden from his crib to a toddler bed. Is it just me or is the room spinning a bit? Why is my chest so tight? Oh yeah, that’s that thing that happens when I’m reminded of HOW MUCH MY KID IS GROWING UP. *sniff* We found the perfect little bed.

We really wanted to graduate him from the nursery sheets he was using too, and found some absolutely wonderful toddler bedsets at Olive Kids. In fact, Olive Kids carries all kinds of colorful and fun kids designs for all purposes. Many things can be personalized, and they are all incredibly cute and fun. I decided to let John make the final decision on the bedset design (and if you know anything about my control issues, you will know this is a big deal) and even though I really wanted the Wild Animals Set but John chose Trains, Planes and Trucks

And you know what? He CHOSE WELL. Braden loves it - he exclaims over the “Pwanes!” and “Twucks!” and “Twains!” And it is really adorable.

It’s made with bright, happy colors, and the material seems strong, yet nice and comfy. And he adjusted to his new bed, pillow, and bedset MUCH faster than I wanted him to had expected him to. I blame credit the soft sheets and warm, cuddly comforter.

Hi there, Great timing! We finished redoing Taylor's room this past weekend and I will send you pictures by this Friday.

It turned out great!! Originially her room had two pink walls and two mint green walls. We kept the pink and then painted the mint green walls with an awesome turquiose color (one of the coordinating colors that was recommended). She is so proud of her big girl room.
The quality of the products are fantastic! And the colors in the Mermaid pattern are even better in person than online.

I met Jacqueline the mom behind Blessing Abound on Twitter. She is a wonderful mom to 4 children, whom she home schools in Alaska. On her blog it says "from the land of the midnight sun", It must be an amazing thing to see the sun at midnight although I can't sleep unless it is pitch black. We all know that Valentines day is the most fun when you are a kid. You and your mom go to the store and purchase your favorite Valentines day cards to give to the kids in your class. Then you have to decide which on to give to each class member - you don't want to give the wrong card. Heaven forbid you give a card to a boy that makes him think you "like like" him when you really don't like him at all but your mom is making you give him one. (Or maybe that was just me :)

Then you have the special valentine card collector that you made in your class. I remember making them out of shoe boxes, brown paper lunch bags and even making one out of paper mache! I always bugged my mom to make heart shaped sugar cookies that I could decorate with frosting and those sweet tart hearts with saying on them. Which we did!

At the Valentines day party we ate lots of sweets, put our valentines day cards in each other special valentine mail box and couldn't wait to open all our card. Our parent usually kept them around for a couple of day; till we lost interest and then throw them away.

Today is our Christmas party which we look forward to each year. Russell and Anita have our lunch catered by 12 Pines which makes outstanding food, we can't wait to see what is on the menu! We also do a very fun yankee swap which always makes us laugh! Some of things people bring - I wonder were they find them!

As you can imagine, the holiday season at Olive Kids is always very busy. This year it was especially busy because we didn't have power for 3 days during our busiest week! We had to move the embroidery machines to our other building (which only lost power for 1 day) so we could make our floor pillows in time for Christmas delivery.

Stephanie braved the cold, she had a generator that was powering her computer and the printers so she could get everything personalized in time. Then everyone worked together to ensure everything arrived in our customer's home in time to make it under the tree! We did it with time to spare - teamwork really does pay off!

"For the past month, I have had moms, grandmas, aunts and friends all asking for gift ideas for my kids. In the hopes of not actually having my entire house taken over by toys, I try to recommend other practical stuff with kid-friendly designs that my kids can use and will love- Olive Kids has a huge selection of items that fit this bill!
We reviewed this super cute bumblebee pillow and the farm blanket from Olive Kids. The pillow is incredibly soft and Lilly loved it as soon as we pulled it out of the box. Both items were very well made and have held up through many pillow fights, tent constructions and pretend sleepovers .
There are a couple of reasons that I like the things from Olive Kids. The first is how comprehensive they are in their sets of items- This pillow, for instance, is just part of the "Flowerland" kids bedding collection. The entire collection has everything from sheets to comforter covers to curtains and valances and even things like shower curtains and liners and rugs. Another of my favorite things about Olive Kids is the huge variety of personalized products that they offer- They have everything from placemats to framed art to clocks (like the one at the beginning of the post) Plus, they offer such a large number of number of different designs that you are sure to find something that will appeal to just about any kid-- that train-loving guy, the dino-obsessed gal, the princess-fiend or any of the other obsessions that young children have! Price-wise, the items at Olive Kids are pretty comparable to other speciality kid items on the market.

"My nearly 4 year old son wants nothing more than a Buzz Lightyear bedroom. I admit Buzz Lightyear is the reason for the season as far as he is concerned and who can say he'll still feel that way in 3 months let alone three years from now? As you know Olive Kids has a Holiday Gift Guide to help you find the right gift for all the kids on your list! We are a little bias with our love for our products so we reached out to some mom bloggers to get their opinions.

Deb who is a mom of 3 girls and the blogger behind "Just a mom's take on things" added us to her holiday gift guide

Here is her take on Olive Kids

Each of my girls was able to pick out the design that she wanted for a bookmark and nametag, that were then personalized with their names. I was interested to see that they didn’t choose the same design for both items in all cases:

When they arrived, the girls were absolutely thrilled. The older two have been using their bookmarks constantly when they read. And I attached the name tags to their backpacks – with our track record in losing items (at least my oldest’s), having their names on things is definitely a great idea, and I love that the names aren’t prominently displayed either so it’s not a safety hazard. There’s space on the backs of the nametags to fill out contact information as well, so these can be used as luggage tags if you travel too.

The girls are impressed with the fun designs and are thrilled with having their names on them. I am also impressed with the quality – both of the printing, and of the bookmarks and tags themselves. They are coated in a heavy plastic, making them extremely sturdy – something that’s definitely a good thing when kids are involved.

My oldest picked the ‘Butterfly Garden’ design for both her bookmark and nametag and is thrilled to have her name entwined with the butterflies flying around. My 5-year-old chose mermaids for her bookmark and one of her favorite things – ponies, for her nametag. My youngest loves having the ‘fishies’ and turtles on her bookmark and is all about the pink ‘tea party’ design on her name tag.

One thing I like a lot about Olive Kids is how well everything coordinates – the same styles that the girls had to choose from for the bookmarks and name tags are available in placemats, wall art, other accessories, and even bedding.

The bottom line:

Thanksgiving Traditions

Thanksgiving traditions are sometimes handed down generation after generation; other are introduced to the family through marriage, family friends or just because you came up with a good idea and everyone liked it!
When I was a child our tradition was to go to my Nana's on my mom's side. My Nana was a very proper French lady, eating at her house was like being at a very fancy restaurant. She was a wonderful cook, but very very old fashion; the girls has to do all the dishes by hand! My sister and I were the only girls in the family so while everyone else was relaxing we were doing all the dishes! No matter how many times we said that our two brothers should help us Nana would not change her mind. Our brother loved it!

Thanksgiving is now at my mom's and it's a little more relaxed than at Nana's. Our family has grown so much; that we had to put up a kids' table. All the kids really want to be at the grown up table, but there just isn't enough room. My parents are very happy that they have 16 grand children and a great grand child on the way. But their dining room table only fits 12 people and if you add in the number of adults you get a grand total of 32! My brothers only come with their family every other year so the adult can fit at the table but not the kids.

Two years ago when I started working at Olive Kids I noticed that we made beautiful Thanksgiving placemats. I decided to buy them for the kid's table to make them feel special. Well it worked! The kids loved them! They have already asked Nana if they could use them again this year

Yes, I still have to the dishes with but with help from everyone including the boys and a dishwasher!

Interview with Ohana Mama

I think the hardest part of this interview was deciding which pictures to send her! I tried to get around it but I had not choice My son got married in 2006 and I decided I would send one of the pictures from this special day! I sent the link to my son after it was posted and his reply was "Mom you cut me off"! I am 5'5" and my son is 6' 3" so it was easy to cut him out of the pictures you can see a little of his shoulder if you look closely!

Today we're talking story with Kim Poirier, the Marketing Director for the fabulous and fun Olive Kids (what a cool gig to have!). I am sure many, if not all, of you have heard of Olive Kids. They have the cutest coordinates for your child's room. So you know the product...now let's get to know the marketing guru that's launched Olive Kids into all of our lives! Give a big Aloha to Kim!

Aloha Kim!, Olive Kids seems like THE place to go to get your kid's room decorated! How did you get started with this awesome company?

I started working for Olive Kids two years ago, after I lost my job and moved to the Mondnock region in New Hampshire. I looked around at the different companies that were here and decided that I loved the products Olive Kids designed and the story of how they got started. I sent them my resume (they were not hiring) and persuade them for a couple of months, then I was lucky enough for them to decide to create a position for me here.

A little bit about the Olive Kids story...Olive Kids got started by a mom (Anita) and dad (Russell) who were both in the design industry, they went looking for kid bedding for their then 3 year old daughter and couldn't find anything that wasn't geared around a kid movie or cartoon, so they took their design knowledge and created Olive Kids. When they started Olive Kids it was through licensing their products to different companies who sold the products to different stores. After a year of doing this they started getting customer calls because they found one of our product but couldn't find the others to match. That is how Olive Kids' online store was created, customers wanted what we were designing but they couldn't find it in one spot so we launched the Olive Kids web site.

The selection at Olive Kids is amazing, there's so so much! What are your favorite items that you offer?

My favorites that's tough - I love our Pirates and Mermaids design, Our plush pillow and shams are adorable but if I really had to pick I would say our floor pillows are the best personalized gift we offer, I know my nieces and nephews love them.

Are the designs at Olive Kids all original? Who comes up with the great designs?

Yes everything Olive Kids sells on our site is designed by Russell and Anita, one of them come up with a concept of a design and then they work together to bring it to life.

Where does Olive Kids get their inspiration on items to carry?

We get a lot of our inspiration from Russell and Anita's 3 kids, ideas from parents who work at Olive Kids and from comments our customers send us.

With kids of your own, how do you do it all? Share with us the secrets of being a mom and a top exec at Olive Kids?

I can tell you from working directly with Anita and Russell, parents themselves, that flexibility and organization are key to getting it all done, well most of it anyway. They also hire people who care as much as they do about the products they create and the customers we serve.

I am lucky to work a 4 day work week so I can save all the running around I have to do till Monday which allows me to have family time on the weekend. I also taught both my boys how to cook when they were little; so they can start dinner on the nights that they do not have after school activities; my 15 year old son is quite the cook. They also do all of their own laundry and have a set list of chores during the week. We share the responsibilities in the house so life is easier on everyone.

Katherine Brooks of Big Coat Productions contacted me in July to see if we would be interested in having our Tea Party Bedding featured on their hit show. It took less than a second to say yes! She sent me these pictures so I could have a sneak peak of the TV shoot. I though I'd share them with you all.

After 3 years of French toile and nursery pastels, my son was ready for a big-kid room. The trains, planes, and trucks theme was an obvious choice as my son loves anything with wheels, especially tractors. Olive Kids provided me with the essentials to design a creative and personal room that was afforable--and one my son would love. The fun, energizing color scheme inspired me to paint an interactive landscape mural. I used magnetic paint to create "roads" on the walls, where Olive Kids wallies mingle with vehicle magnets, and my son can create his own traffic patterns. I was able to keep nursery remnants, like the rocking chair--giving it a facelift with an Olive Kids quilt and updating the old lampshade with a new coordinating fabric.

Baby Let's Shop - Shops at Olive Kids

Olive Kids is a fabulous option if you are looking for a one stop shop for decorating your kids room.
They have many fun and kid friendly themes. Blankets, sheets, clocks, pillows, lamps and rugs are just a few of the products they carry.

We have their Transportation Raschel Fleece Throw and it's a great quality blanket. While much too big for baby L's little toddler bed we just love it's generous size. We do keep it in baby L's bed and fold it in half for the rare occasion that we make his bed. It's nice for his bed because I often find myself squeezed into L's tiny bed trying to comfort him to sleep and it's nice to be able to cozy up under a blanket with him that fits me too. Baby L hates being covered to sleep and this blanket bundled up at the bottom of his bed helps prevent him from falling out but is still within his reach if he does decide he wants a cover.

After quite a few trips through both the washer and dryer this blanket is still soft and fluffy, the colors have not faded nor has the blanket started to pill, it looks as great as it did the day it arrived. I love the idea of being able to pick a theme, pick the pieces you need (ex bedding, decor etc) order and your done, all that's left is the wait.

Stacy not only runs this blog to show Mom's what is available for their kids she also makes the most adorable tutus and sells them at her etsy store. She like Olive Kids is trying to get the word out about a mom run business (although Olive Kids is actually a Mom and Dad run business) we worked together to promote each others work. This is what she has to say about Olive Kids.

I am sure that you have seen other reviews of Olive Kids. I know that I had. Olive Kids was actually the inspiration for me to try to get the word out about my tutus through mom review blogs.

So of course I was super excited about the idea that I was going to get to review one of their items. I was sent 4 Flowerland Butterfly Knob. They are super cute!

The Angel Forever - forever loves Olive Kids

A little while ago Mommy Cracked had a really neat giveaway for some fabulous Olive Kids merchandise. Like I do from time to time, I entered a comment for a chance to win. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to finally get to see Olive Kids personalized items in my own house.

I have been in love with Olive Kids items for years now. I have drooled at their amazing bedroom sets with endless matching accessories (even for boys). I have thought about getting my boys and relatives some of the personalized products that they offer. Now thanks to seeing the items, I know this is something I will buy for people this holiday season.
